World best Player Cristiano Ronaldo have signed a contract extension with Real Madrid this past week, which will keep him at the club until 2021, and crucially, until he’s 36.
Given his recent run of poor form, many Real Madrid fans have questioned the wisdom of offering him such a long contract extension, but the Portuguese will be confident of answering the critics and skeptics, as he’s done throughout his career.
But while the new deal will earn him vast sums of money – just like the lifetime Nike deal he also signed this week – the Madrid contract could actually end up costing him some money…
Ronaldo’s Nike glasses could land him in trouble with Real Madrid
Because the Nike glasses he wore to the contract presentation haven’t gone down well with the club, according to Sport.
Ronaldo rocked a pair of hipster-style spectacles to the contract renewal, which was surprising, given that he doesn’t actually need glasses and rarely ever wears fashion glasses.
But as it turns out, there was a commercial reason behind the glasses – they were Nike branded, and as a Nike client, he was promoting his company’s products.
But here’s the thing: Real Madrid are sponsored by Adidas, and the Madrid club ban players from wearing competitor brands to official club events.
He could potentially be fined for his commercial transgression, but you get the feeling that’s unlikely.
