The Super Eagles were 3-1 winners over the Desert Foxes of Algeria on Saturday evening in Uyo in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
A brace from Victor Moses in between a rare strike by John Obi Mikel ensured Nigeria continued the series with maximum points, even though a Nabil Bentaleb long-range strike caused some nerve.
With the victory, the Super Eagles now have six points from two games after also winning 2-1 in their first game against Zambia.
Here, we take a look at FIVE things we learnt from the victory over Algeria.
5. Etebo will be key to Super Eagles
The Feirense of Portugal man, just like he did on his debut against Egypt in March, shone once again in a midfield three with Ogenyi Onazi and John Obi Mikel. He assisted Mikel’s goal with that wonderful through pass, and was impressive overall. The tenacity, goalscoring threat and drive he brings to the Eagles’ midfield unsettled the Algerians and will be key to the Super Eagles moving forward.
4. Onazi needs a wake-up call
Since breaking into the Super Eagles in late 2012, Onazi has been a mainstay in the first eleven under the different coaches the team has had since then, but it is now looking like he needs to be replaced. A good player, no doubt, but his rollercoaster moves often cost the team, as was evident in Algeria’s goal and Zambia’s goal in the previous game. Coach Gernot Rohr must seek a more disciplined player to fill that holding midfield role.
3. Leon Balogun is a star, but defence still a worry
The 28-year old was unarguably Nigeria’s best defender on the day, and the Eagles may have conceded more than once if he wasn’t there. However, the defence as a unit still remains a problem. While his partner, William Troost-Ekong also put in a solid display, the coordination of the entire defence was poor especially in the second half, a development which has more to do with the full backs though.
2. Iheanacho still not a proper number 9
The youngster came to limelight as an attacking midfielder, but has been converted to a center forward at Manchester City more or less. While he has got in the goals for both club and country, it is evident the 20-year old is still learning the ropes as a number 9. Although, his movements created spaces in between the Algerian defence, his lack of marksmanship meant he couldn’t get on the scoresheet.
1. Victor Moses is reborn!
Maybe one will have to credit Antonio Conte with Moses’ renaissance. While his talent has never been in doubt, his often lackadaisical approach means he has never truly fulfilled his potential…until recently. He looks much more disciplined on and off the ball, and his contribution to defending helped Elderson Echiejile out on more than one occasion against Riyad Mahrez. If he continues like this, he may eventually turn out to be the player we all hoped he can be.
